Educational
technologies in teaching a foreign language
The choice of educational technology in order to achieve
the goals and objectives set in the framework of the discipline "Foreign
Language" is determined by the need to form in students a complex of
common cultural competencies which are necessary for interpersonal interaction
and cooperation in cross-cultural communication, and to provide the required
quality of education at all stages. Forms and techniques used to teach English
implement competence and student-active approach, which, in turn, contribute to
the formation and development of: a)
multicultural linguistic personality able to achieve productive communication
with native speakers, i.e. representatives of other cultures; b) abilities of
students to carry out various activities using English; c) the cognitive
abilities of the students, and d) their readiness to self-development and
self-education. These forms and techniques also contribute to the formation of
the students’ creative potential to carry out their professional duties in the
future. The educational process is based on a model of mixed training, which
helps to combine efficiently traditional forms of learning and new
technologies. The specifics of the subject "Foreign Language" defines
the need for more extensive use of new educational technologies along with traditional
methods, in order to form the basic practical skills with predominantly frontal forms of work. When teaching a foreign
language, we try to use the following educational technologies:
- Technology of communicative teaching - is aimed at the formation
of students' communicative competence, which is the basis needed to adapt to
the conditions of intercultural communication.
- Technology of multilevel or differentiated training - involves
implementation of cognitive activity of students based on their individual
skills, abilities and interests, encouraging them to realize their creative
potential. Creation and use of diagnostic tests is an integral part of this
technology.
- The technology of modular training - provides the division of
the discipline on quite autonomous sections (modules), integrated in the
general course.
- Information and communication technologies (ICT) - extend the
scope of the educational process, increasing its practical orientation, promote
intensification of students’ independent work and improve their cognitive
activity. There are two types of ICT technologies:
- The technology of using computer
programs - can effectively be added to the process of language teaching at all
levels. Multimedia programs are designed for both classroom and students’
independent work and are aimed at developing grammar and vocabulary skills.
- Internet technologies - provide great opportunities in searching
for information, working out international research projects and making
research.
- Technology of individualization of learning - helps to implement
student-centered approach, taking into account individual characteristics and
students’ needs.
- The technology of testing – is used to control the level of
mastering lexical, grammar material within the module at a certain stage of
teaching. Using the testing technology meets all the international exams in a
foreign language. In addition, this technology allows the teacher to identify
and classify aspects that require additional study.
- Project technology - is focused on simulation of social
interaction of students with a view
to solving the problem, which is defined as part of students’ training,
emphasizing a particular subject area. The use of project technology
contributes to the interdisciplinary competences formed in the process of
teaching English.
- Technology of collaborative learning - realizes the idea of mutual learning, performing as an individual and a collective
responsibility in solving educational problems.
- Gaming technology - allows us to develop skills in considering a
number of possible ways of solving problems, enhancing students' thinking and
revealing personal potential of each student.
- Technology of critical thinking development – provides formation
of a versatile personality able to be critical of the information and to select
information for solving tasks set.
Implementation of competence and student-activity approach
with these technologies is provided by active and interactive learning, such as
business and role play, case studies, collective thinking activity,
discussions, project work research character, etc. At the same time classes
with using interactive forms make up at least 70% of all classes. Integrated
use of all the above mentioned technologies stimulates personal, intellectual
activity, and develops cognitive processes, contributes to the formation of
competencies necessary for future professionals, makes the process of teaching
a foreign language especially successful.
