New Technology in the EFL Learning
The Internet, the huge computer network connecting among themselves of
tens millions of computers, represents practically unlimited opportunities of
use of a personal computer in various spheres of human activity. Nowadays
everyone has already understood that the Internet possesses enormous
information opportunities and not less impressing services. The Internet with
all opportunities and resources is the mean of realization of these aims and
objectives. One of several advantages is the opportunity of working « not
leaving a house ». Use of the Internet in education has grown exponentially.
Thus it has increased the number of people who have been trained and used
constantly updated information to communicate with teachers and with each
others. The global network the Internet offers teachers of foreign languages a
number of useful resources. They are special programs for training of foreign
languages and also authentic materials which are selected by the teacher
individually and adapted for particular educational aims. Inclusion of
materials of a network and the contents of a lesson is one of the basic opportunities
of use of the Internet. Let's recollect once again the peculiarities of a
foreign language subject, irrespective of the opportunities which are offered
us by the Internet, and also the type of an educational institution in which
this language is taught. The major aim is the formation of the communicative
competence, all other aims teaching, educational, developing are realized
during realization of this overall objective. The communicative competence in
its modern understanding provides formation of ability to intercultural
interaction. Nowadays this purpose is the most required by any categories of
the students studying foreign language. Even if the further specialization of
the student is not connected with foreign trips, contacts with foreign experts,
using a world net the Internet becomes more and more necessary source of
getting and transferring information for any specialty. The basic information
in a network is in English. However the content of the informational medium in
the Internet is growing more multilingual. A well- educated person, who also
can be claimed in conditions of rapidly developing technologies of the advanced
countries of the world, should own the information in his sphere. Modern means
of communication with partners, access to information resources of a network in
the Internet assume enough skills of using not only computer, but also foreign
language. It is a reality which is necessary to take into consideration, and,
probably, one of the reasons, why UNESCO has declared the next century as a
century of polyglots. Priority value and a century of information is the
information. A way to success in many areas is access to the information and
skills to work with it, but not only in the native language.
Specificity of a « Foreign Language » subject means
that a leading component of the matter of teaching of the foreign language is
the ways of training activities including all four skills: speaking, listening,
reading and writing, but not basis of sciences. According to the psychological
theory of training activities, teaching to any kind of skills happens during
its performance, actions and operations regarding to them. Therefore for
training pupils to various kinds of speech activities it is necessary to teach
each pupil to practice that kind of speech activities which he possesses in the
given period of time. In a basis of formation of skills in any kind of foreign
language speech activity there are hearing skills. Hence, the priority in
training foreign languages belongs to oral exercises. This is the basic
specificity of a subject and the basic difficulty of teaching; it is especially
if the question concerns the formation of speaking skills.
It is necessary to take into consideration one more
feature of a subject
« Foreign Language ». It is possible to train speech activities only in
dialogues and real communication. And the partner is necessary for this
purpose. The computer program, CD-ROM disk, whatever interactive they would be,
they can provide only dialogue with machine, instead of with the person who is
alive. Exception is made to computer telecommunications, when the student has
possibility to talk in real-time with other users, including native speakers,
from around the world. During the electronic discussions the students can use
both written and spoken language. Besides the communicative competence as we
have seen, is connected closely with linguistics, and also culture, in
particular with the regional geographic competence. Hence, the system of
training the foreign language should be constructed so that the opportunity of
acquaintance to culture of the country of learning language has been given to
students.
Being trained in foreign language, the student can carry out tasks and
the exercises contained in websites of the Internet, for example, write letters with the
help of e-mail in learning language, to participate in virtual clubs of
dialogue teleconferences, to exchange text messages in a mode of real time, to
speak by phone, i.e. to apply any kinds of the information. Thus such
advantages of the Internet, as efficiency of transferring the information to
any distance, an opportunity of access to remote sources of information,
interactivity (an opportunity of a fast feedback and dialogue), search with the
help of search engines and independently, download the received materials to
own computer, work with them, storage in memory of a computer during necessary
time are used.
Development of new technologies of
knowledge and information influences on an education system, causing significant
changes in methods of training. Regular use of the Internet makes process of
training of the English language more attractive to students as they get
unlimited access to interesting regional geographic materials which differ from
out-of-date texts in the textbook. First of all it concerns such themes as
"Sports", "Music", « the Youth fashion ». With the help the
Internet students can expand the lexicon, especially, everyday lexicon, their
spelling improves. The Internet presumes the students’ participation in
selection of a material for practical classes and feels themselves more
independent.
If to speak about features
of teaching materials in the Internet, it is possible to say, that all texts in
the Internet are authentic. Exercises in electronic training courses are
suitable for independent work of students. The educational projects, which are
available in the Internet, allow applying the received language knowledge in a
real situation of dialogue and in writing. All done work then orally is
discussed at a lesson and whenever possible in foreign language. The Internet
in training is not alternative to traditional textbooks. This is only a new
mean of training, which allows coping with a task more successfully.
The most important thing to remember is: the use of
the Internet at a lesson is impossible without participation of the teacher who
should possess necessary skills. At practical classes the most positive benefit
to using the Internet is considered to be its informational role and at the
same time its role in increasing motivation of training is great. The use of
the Internet is very important for the Students’ Independent Study in a choice
of a material and it helps to increase their activity and interest at practical
lessons.
Using the Internet, it is possible to use any
databanks and different encyclopedias, directly to communicate through any
distance with native speakers. In general, training with use of the Internet is
the creative process, which allows developing and creating new methodical
means. During training it is necessary to choose types of texts, ways of their
studying, the form of communication and the control.
