THE USE OF LEXICAL TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE TRANSLATION OF EMPHATIC CONSTRUCTIONS

The topicality of the given study is triggered by the necessity to speculate upon diverse means of emphatic constructions’ translation from English to native Kazakh. As it is known, emphatic constructions can be divided into lexical, grammatical, lexico-grammatical constructions, where different lexical, grammatical, lexico-grammatical means are utilized. Grammatical means dominate in the expression of the emphasis in English, conversely in the Kazakh language lexical means dominate.

To translate emphatic constructions we resort to diverse transformations, such as lexical and grammatical transformations. On the basis of comparative analysis we can come to the conclusion that in the Kazakh language the lexical transformations as addition, omission and substitution are frequently used. Lexical ones include different changes of lexical units during the translation. Addition is the most popular transformation in the translation from English to Kazakh.

Below we examine examples in the text to the usage of emphatic do

1) He had worked at that business! Men did work in those days.

Өз уақытында ол көп жұмыс істеді. Ол кезде жұмыс жақсы атқарылатын.

Another translation:

Ол кезде шынында да жұмыс жақсы атқарылатын еді.

2) The house was too big. After June was married, If she ever did marry this fellow, as he supposed she would, he would let it and go into rooms.

А) Үй тіптен үлкен. Егер Джун шынында да тұрмысқа шығар болса, ол үлкен үйді жалға беріп, өзі пәтер жалдайды, мұны одан күтуге болады.

В) Джун тұрмысқа шыққанда, шынында да бір күні шығар болса.

3) He had married this woman, conquered her, made her his own, and it seemed to him contrary to the most fundamental of all laws, the law of possession, that he could do more than own her body – if indeed he could do that, which he was beginning to doubt. If anyone had asked him if he wanted to own her soul, the question would have seemed to him both ridiculous and sentimental. But he did so want, and the writing said he never would.

4) It would be unbearable to contemplate the necessity of making his relations public property. Short of the most convincing proof he must still refuse to believe, for he did not wish to punish himself. And all the time at heart – he did believe.

The use of “It is (was) ……….that” construction.

Given sentence can be translated also in this way:

Оны бірінші бйқап, есімін сұраған Босини болатын.

1) The engaged couple thus scrutinized were unconscious of this passive goddess. It was Bosinney who first noticed her, and asked her name.

2) It was then that she saw with whom she had to deal; the lady was undoubtedly Mrs. Soames, the young man Mr. Bossinney.

Ол сөзсіз екеуін де таныды, ханым Сомс және мистер Босини.

3) There was June, the atom with flaming hair, who had climbed all over him- twined and twisted herself about his heart that was made to be plaything and beloved resort of tiny helpless things.

4) She took the vase of roses and left the room. Soames remained seated. Was it for this that he had sighed this contract? Was it for this that he was going to spend some ten thousand pounds? Bosinney`s phrase came back to him: Women are the devil!

Lexical emphatic models, used for giving emotional color certain lexical means.

1)In the bravery of light gloves, buff waistcoats, feather and frocks, the family were present – even Aunt Ann, who now but seldom left the corner of her brother Timothy’s green drawing – room, where, under the aegis of plume of dyed pampas grass in the light blue vase, she sat all day reading and knitting. Even Aunt Ann was there.

2) In this great chair with the book – rest sat old Jolyon, the figure – head of his family and class and creed, with his white head and dome- like forehead, the representative of moderation, and order, and love of property. As lonely an old man as there was in London.

None of the Forsytes happened to be architects, but one of them knew two architects who would never have worn such a hat upon a call of ceremony in the London season.
