The Kipling’s Monitions
We know
Rudyard Kipling as a child writer. But he is also a poet who is known as an
author of famous poems. I want to analyse some of them. This poem author named "IF".
Minority of us acquainted with Kipling's talent of philosopher. In this poem
author touches the important questions of human existence and offers his
advises about life, based on his experience. In his views possible is influence
of East, where author lived for some years. This work is written by ordinary
form that is easy for the reading.
“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too….”
We
would preserve tranquility of brain in conditions when the environment dropped
into the social madness under the influence of any circumstances. Agreement to
the general moving of crowd means to become the voluntary slave of it. The
flock that itself situated under the guidance of shepherd is dangerous beast
that can terminate everybody. In addition the supposed nobleness of shepherd
and his aims, methods of theirs obtain is doubt.
That is we need ourselves to try
evaluation current conditions, attempting to correct our positions in the
society, harmonizing them to the corresponding to our life's views. The self -
confidence is very important thing, having influence on self - development. But
it is necessary to find definite middle between the absolute alienating and
worshiping to the crowd's opinion. Harmonizing the evaluation of personal and
public opinions about any subjects we can find the correct way for the self -
development. Without regarding of the critical opinion the self - development
is finished without success. But the excessive yielding to the environment's
opinion also is not promotes for the success. The skillfulness to obtain the
right middle is difficult, but necessary thing.
“…If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise….”
Author
teaches us for the skillfulness to wait. I understand it as ability which does not
hasten events. We must act under influence real necessary to meddle in action,
but not under outburst of any factors. The lie and hating what existence in the
world birth themselves, multiplication by definite persons under the influence
circumstances when there are not forces to bar them. If we have ability to
prevent for the dissemination of lie and hating – it would be mean to interrupt
these unseemly chains and appearance of stipulations for the decision of
difficult questions by right way.
What is wise? We treat to it by various
ways. That what we are calling now as wise, then would seem as foolish and vise
versa. Author advises not overemphasize own – wise, that then may be just any
level outlook’s development but not absolute true. “To look too good and talk
too wise” – it means challenging to environment and openly to pretend for self
– absolute. If under the exterior distinction the interior fillings are absent
– it seems strangely. Exaggerate wise in talking also is alienating to society.
“Don’t tell that you are clever, because you will meet somebody cleverer than
you”. The tranquility in conversations is mark of wise, but not using wise
words.
“…If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
If you can think – and not mare thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;”
Kipling warns us even the truth
sometime may be applying for the lie by unseemly men. We must have force and
will – power strongly suffers a defeat and bear down it to rebuild all that had
broken. “Worn out tools” – generally is the self – will that must not depend on
environment. We ourselves possess by them and must use them rightly.
“…If you can make
one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch – and – toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;”
In
communication with correspond of low society and high society we must apply
special ways of behaving, harmonizing these contacts with them. This
harmonization the author understands as keeping the virtue (the mark of noble
or high society) contacting as a part of low – society, and share himself as a
part of low – society intercoursing with high society.
“…If you can fill
the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!”
Communication with enemies and friends
is not constant situation. A hurt we may get as from foes as from friends.
Author consults to get ready for the hurts from various persons and be
preparing to receive them strongly.
All men influence each other, but this
process must not be too powerful for not pressing personal way self –
development.
Finishing his rime author tells about
possessing the Earth. I comprehend it not so as brutal own of Earth but as
proposal to consider the planet by the part of himself and participating its
problems.
